Tax Credit for Public Transit Passes

Did you know that if you take the public transit you can write off your passes on Income tax?  I think this is awesome!
Here is the info below

About the Tax Credit for Public Transit

Find out more about the federal income tax credit for weekly or longer duration public transit passes and electronic payment cards, and how the Government of Canada is encouraging the use of public transit to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

What is the tax credit for public transit?

On July 1, 2006, the Government of Canada launched its program to offer individual Canadians a non-refundable tax credit to help cover the cost of public transit. Because it is a non-refundable tax credit, anyone who applies does not receive the money in the form of a refund. Instead, the amount claimed is multiplied by the lowest personal income tax rate for the year (15% for 2007, 2008) and then is deducted from the amount of tax owed for that year. Visit theCanada Revenue Agency Web site for additional information about how to qualify and claim the public transit amount.

What does the tax credit for public transit mean for me?

If your monthly transit pass costs $100, the amount you can claim in 2008 would be $1,200, resulting in a tax credit of $180.00 (twelve months multiplied by 15%).
You will be eligible to claim amounts you have paid for travel that occurs during the 2008 calendar year, but you must have proof of purchase. At a minimum you need to keep your expired public transit passes and receipts for electronic payment cards to support your claim. Visit theCanada Revenue Agency Web site for additional information about how to qualify and claim the tax credit for public transit.

Who's managing this tax credit for public transit?

The tax credit for public transit is being administered by the Canada Revenue Agency. If you would like more information on how to claim your tax credit, visit the Canada Revenue Agency Web site.

Why is the government giving a tax credit for public transit?

Canadians are concerned about traffic congestion and the harmful greenhouse gas emissions that come with it. Increasing the use of public transit, including buses, subways, commuter trains and ferries, will help ease traffic congestion in our urban areas and reduce air pollution that dirties our air and affects our health. The tax credit for public transit makes public transit more affordable for Canadians and provides clean air in our communities.
Encouraging greater use of public transit is one element of the Government of Canada's environmental agenda to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote clean air.

CHOLESTEROL AND THE HEART

There has been a lot of talk lately about cholesterol and the heart and Becel  has started a campaign about knowing your cholesterol number.  There is  a QUIZ  you can take to find out how old your heart is.  I have a bit of high cholesterol so I found this very useful to me.
Some factors that cause high cholesterol  are smoking, stress, poor eating habits, extra body weight,  lack of exercise and of course hereditary factors.
Here are some ways to have a Healthy heart

DAILY INTAKE MUST INCLUDE PLANT STEROLS

Plant sterols — also called “phytosterols” — are substances naturally found in plant-based foods and have been in our diet for thousands of years. Plant sterols are naturally found in many heart healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains, and in vegetable oils like sunflower, safflower and canola oils. However, it is difficult to consume enough plant sterols from these foods to see a significant effect. Studies show that consuming 2 grams of plant sterols daily can help to lower your cholesterol by up to 9% starting within 3 weeks. Two grams of plant sterols is equivalent to eating 425 tomatoes, 150 apples or 11 cups of peanuts!

International health experts such as the American Heart Association, as part of the National Cholesterol Education Program, suggest eating 2 grams of plant sterols a day to enhance a LDL cholesterol-lowering lifestyle and diet.

Here’s what you can do to get more plant sterols in your diet:

  • Enjoy a variety of vegetables and fruit every day. Aim for 7-10 servings a day, as recommended by Canada’s Food Guide.
  • Eat 2-3 servings of plant sterol-fortified foods each day.
  • Cook and bake with vegetable oils and non-hydrogenated margarines made from vegetable oils.
  • Snack on nuts, like almonds and walnuts, or sprinkle a small handful on your cereal and salads.
  • Include whole grains in your meals. Look for recipes that use barley, brown rice, oats and quinoa
  • Take the HEART TRUTH QUIZ Here
  • You can also sign up for HEARTBEATS Here
  •  Heartbeats gives you a whole year of lifestyle changes, delivered once a week and designed to boost your heart health. Each change is achievable for women of all health and fitness levels, and if you incorporate each one into your lifestyle, you’ll see your health and energy levels improve over the weeks and months.
Be kind to your heart as you have only one life to live so live the best you can be !

Happy Mothers Day!

What will you do for your Mother today on her special day ?
Will you buy her flowers, take her out to eat, get a small gift?
It is wonderful to have a mom so make sure she you let her know how much she is loved today and everyday!

God Bless all the Moms and may your day be filled with joy!
Have a wonderful day as you deserve it.

Mother

A Mother’s love, is sure to find
A way to comfort, ease your mind

She knows just how, to build you up
When you’re so down, and can’t look up

You love the way, she makes you feel
Like you’re so special, her ideal

Her thought must start, with God above
To bring such caring, with such love

And as it flows, like gentle rain
It surely helps, when troubles pain

The love from mine, is oh so clear
I only wish, she was still here

Her warming glow, is missed each day
Even though, I seldom say

But she did leave, her gift behind
To help me through, when I may pine

And that’s the feel, known deep inside
Her faith and love, I still confide

Water Conservation

                                Life's Precious Commodity

Sometimes I think we take our water supply for granted.  We don't really think about it as it is always there in supply for us.  This is such a precious commodity and is needed for virtually everything that we do on a day to day basis.  What would we do without it.  We should be conscious of how much we use.  there are places that don't even have clean fresh drinking water.
So lets conserve our water and take the pledge

Warning About Scented Plug-Ins

  House Fires-Please Read This
I am Superintendent of an apartment building and the fire chief was telling me not to use those scented plug ins as they can cause fires. Since then I only by the stand alone units of scented spray and no plug in the wall kind whatsoever.  I was told this a year ago and found this article on the subject.

A house burnt down... nothing left but ashes. They have good insurance so the house will be replaced and most of the contents. That is the good news.

However, they were sick when they found out the cause of the fire. The insurance investigator sifted through the ashes for several hours. He had the cause of the fire traced to the master bathroom. He asked her  what she had plugged in
the bathroom. She listed the normal things...curling iron, blow dryer.
He kept saying to her, 'No, this would be something that would disintegrate at high temperatures'. Then her sister-in-law
remembered she had a Glade Plug-In, in the bathroom.

The investigator had one of those 'Aha' moments. He said that was the cause of the fire. He said he has seen more house fires started with the plug-in type room fresheners than anything else. He said the plastic they are made from is thin. He also said that in every case there was nothing left to prove that it even existed. When the investigator looked in the wall plug, the two prongs left from the plug-in were still in there.

Her sister-in-law had one of the plug-ins that had a small night light built in it. She said she had noticed that the light would dim and then finally go out. She would walk in to the bathroom a few hours later, and the light would be back on again. The investigator said that the unit was getting too hot, and would dim and go out rather than just blow the light bulb. Once it cooled down it would come back on..... That is a warning sign

The investigator said he personally wouldn't have any type of plug in fragrance device anywhere in his house. He has seen too many places that have been burned down due to them.

Please watch what you buy and warn others about these as it could save lives.

National Emergency Preparedness Week runs May 1 to 7

Can you survive a 72-hour emergency?

I need to get a kit ready and a plan in place for this.  I found this information to be helpful and thought I would share it with everyone.
Individuals should prepare to sustain themselves for 72 hours in the event of an emergency because although the city will do what it can to help people in need, it may not be able to reach everyone.
With a variety of incidents that could classify as emergencies — chemical spills, extreme weather, transportation accidents — it is important to be ready for anything.
Some items to include in an emergency kit are food, water, emergency contact information, prescriptions and a first-aid kit.

Other items will be useful but may be overlooked: toilet paper, gloves and a whistle. A kit is easy to put together and thinking about what would satisfy one's needs should the kit be needed will help ensure necessary items are included.
The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services has made it possible for individuals to receive red alerts and emergency information advisories through its website, text messages, e-mail, RSS Feeds and Twitter. This system makes information easily accessible and will give citizens a description of the event, location and recommended actions. To sign up, visit www.ontario.ca/emo
